A staged reading is a form of theater production where actors read from scripts while incorporating minimal staging, movement, and dramatization. Unlike fully produced plays with sets, costumes, and memorized lines, staged readings focus on the playwright's words and the actors' interpretations. This format allows audiences to experience new, original works in development and provides playwrights with valuable feedback. Staged readings are an essential part of the playwriting process, helping writers refine their work before full production. They're also an intimate and accessible way for audiences to engage with new theatrical voices.
Our staged readings are performed at the Truro Public Library (7 Standish Way, Truro, MA 02666) at 2:00pm on the third Saturday of each month from October through April. The library is centrally located on Cape Cod's Outer Cape, easily accessible from Provincetown, Wellfleet, and surrounding communities. Free parking is available. All performances are free and open to the public, making original theater accessible to the entire Cape Cod community.
All Truro Playwright Collective staged readings are free and open to the public—no tickets required! The best way to support our mission is to attend our performances and spread the word about original Cape Cod theater. You can stay informed about upcoming readings by signing up for our mailing list through our website or following us on social media. We also welcome community partnerships and collaborations that help us continue bringing original theater to life on Cape Cod.
Our playwrights are accomplished professional writers with significant credentials in theater, film, and literature. Many have had their work produced Off-Broadway and in regional theaters across the country, published in prestigious anthologies, and recognized with national awards. Our collective includes former executives of major theater organizations like the Dramatists Guild of America, university professors, documentary filmmakers, and writers who have been produced at venues from New York to Los Angeles. Several are published authors and members of the Dramatists Guild. While they live on Cape Cod, their professional experience spans the national and international theater landscape.
Yes! Several plays that began as staged readings at the Truro Playwright Collective have been selected by professional theater companies for full productions:
Liberty Talks: A Colossal Satire by Fermin Rojas received its world premiere at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater in September-October 2024, directed by Janice L. Goldberg. After Lady Liberty steps off her pedestal looking for a bathroom, she accidentally wanders into a theater and decides to share her story—a thoughtful comedy exploring America's most enduring symbol of immigration and freedom.
The Fade Away Advantage by Meryl Cohn premiered at Provincetown Theater in October 2024. This comedy welcomes audiences into a beach cottage in Provincetown where two lifelong friends reunite to discuss an emergency plan they made many years ago…but which plan is it? The play explores the question: how far would you go to keep a promise to a friend?
These successes demonstrate how TPC's staged readings serve as a vital development process for playwrights, allowing them to workshop their work with live audiences before moving to full production. Our free monthly readings provide playwrights the opportunity to hear their words performed, receive audience feedback, and refine their scripts—a crucial step in the journey from page to stage.
The Truro Playwright Collective stages a diverse range of original theatrical works through our readings. Our playwrights create everything from historical dramas and biographical plays to contemporary narratives and experimental works. Past productions have explored Cape Cod history, LGBTQ+ themes, international stories, literary figures, and personal narratives. We celebrate the unique perspectives of our Outer Cape community while engaging with universal human experiences. Each season typically features 7 new works, giving audiences exposure to a wide variety of theatrical styles and voices.
Please send your headshot and resume to founder & curator Joseph M. Paprzycki. Each playwright chooses their own actors and directors, so he can refer you to our playwrights for consideration.
Participation in the Truro Playwright Collective is by invitation only. We select established playwrights who have demonstrated experience in theatrical writing and maintain a connection to Cape Cod's Outer Cape region. Our founder looks for writers who are committed to developing original work through our collaborative staged reading process. Each season, we invite a small cohort of playwrights whose voices and perspectives will contribute to the diversity and richness of our theatrical offerings.
We do not accept unsolicited play submissions. The Truro Playwright Collective operates on an invitation-only basis, with playwrights selected by our founder for each season. However, we encourage all Cape Cod theater artists to stay connected with the local performing arts community. Attend our free staged readings, participate in other Cape Cod theater opportunities, and continue developing your craft. We're always aware of emerging voices in our regional theater scene.
